Norfolk Senior High Achievement Center

     The Achievement Center has been developed to improve the performance of students with learning skills deficiencies in grades 6-12 through research-based interventions.  Our goal is to have students become independent, engaged, self-aware learners, and goal-oriented for their future.  Students may access the Achievement Center from a study hall or through a teacher or guidance referral.

What are the components?

  • Direct instruction for Learning Strategies based on the Strategic Instruction Model from the University of Kansas.
  • Drop-in tutor services - open to any student before or after school, during a study hall, or by recommendation from a classroom teacher.
  • Testing center for accommodations or modifications using Test Talker or other computer software for writing.
  • Peer tutoring - this will include specific training and will follow guidelines.  It will be offered for graduation credit.
  • Department consultation by Achievement Center staff to provide necessary communication and planning for learning strategies, differentiated curriculum ideas, accommodations and/or modifications planning for students.
  • Direct Reading instruction using Language! for students with specific reading needs.
  • Alternative curriculum for pull-out classes on a limited basis for math and language arts (special education).

Who will be working in the Achievement Center? 

  • Achievement Center Learning Strategy specialists
  • Para-educators
  • Peer tutors
  • Regular classroom teachers may be asked to help during special times or may be utilized on an appointment basis determined by student needs.
  • When will the Achievement Center be available for students?
  • The Achievement Center will open in August, 2006.
  • It will be available from 7:30 a.m. until 4:15 p.m.
  • Student may check out of study hall to come to the Achievement Center

Who will benefit from services in the Achievement Center? 

  • Any student that needs one-on-one help
  • Students involved in the SAT process
  • Students with 504 Plans
  • Students with Individualized Education Plans
  • Students with Individualized Education Plans
  • Students with 504 Plans
  • Students involved in the SAT process
  • Any Sophomore student with previous involvement at the Junior High during the 2005/2006 school year
  • The first year will be a learning process for everyone
