JUMPING GENRES:  A LINK BETWEEN READING
AND WRITING

Junior High School
Dorothy Fuller/Linda Scranton

Eighth grade English students will be provided with a variety of up-to-date reading and writing experiences through this project. They will learn to identify and read a variety of literature genres.  They will read one genre and “jump” to a written response on another genre.  For example, a student might read a drama and respond with a short story.  It is the intention of this project to determine students’ understanding of a story and recreate its meaning in a new genre.  The Criterion Referenced Test (CRT) that is given at the end of school year requires eighth graders to identify short stories, autobiography, poetry, science fiction and drama.  By both reading and writing in a variety of genres, it is anticipated that students will gain a better understanding of each structure.  Funds will help to purchase student reading and writing materials as well as teacher resources.
