4:30 Session

 

4:30 Session—The Board of Education met on Monday, January 14, 2008 at 4:30 p.m. for the study session at the Norfolk Public Schools Administration Office, and at 7:30 moved to the City Council Chambers for the regular meeting.  Members present included Brad Krivohlavek, Jane McDaniel, Julee Pfeil, Clark Froehlich, Alfredo Ramirez, and Paul Cazabon.  Absent:  None.  Also present were Superintendent Marlene Uhing, Robert Waite, Dan DePasquale, and Doug Witte.

 

Legal Meeting – Brad Krivohlavek, President, called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. and declared a legal meeting of the Board of Education.

 

Open Meetings Act – Brad Krivohlavek announced that a complete copy of the Open Meetings Act was available for review if anyone was interested and that a complete board packet is available for review.

 

Presentation on High School Online Course Development – Angela Simpson, Senior High Assistant Principal gave a presentation on how the Senior High is developing online courses.  This is in the early stages and Norfolk is one of four pilot schools in our service unit presently developing online courses.  It is another piece of the 21st Century skills.  Emphasis should include:  information and communication skills; thinking and problem-solving skills; interpersonal and self-directional skills, and it should be centered on the student.  Online learning has a role in all four areas.

 

Process for Hiring Curriculum Director – Dr. Uhing summarized the process she is planning to use for the hiring of a new curriculum director.  Advertisements will be put in the Omaha World-Herald, NSBA website, ESU administrators who will send to all their administrative staff, and internal listing.  The closing date will be February 11 with interviews being conducted on February 18.  There will be four teams interviewing each candidate.  Announcement will be in late February or early March.

NSBA Convention – The board members attending the national convention received flight, registration, and housing confirmation and schedules.

 

Preview of 2008-2009 School Calendar Dr. DePasquale gave the board a copy of Draft 5 of the 208-2009 school calendar.  The February calendar will be adopted at the February board meeting.

 

Staff Appreciation Update – Dr. Uhing stated that we are planning a very similar format for this year’s Staff Appreciation on March 19.  Paul Cazabon and Bob Waite volunteered to cook the meat.  The speaker will be Maddie Fennel, a former Teacher of the Year.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the event.

 

Audit Report – The audit report will be postponed until later as the Finance Committee will be meeting to review the audit before making a recommendation to the whole board on acceptance.


Executive Session – It was moved by Clark Froehlich, seconded by Paul Cazabon, to move into executive session for the purpose of discussion of school land and negotiations.  Roll call:  Aye – Krivohlavek, McDaniel, Ramirez, Pfeil, Cazabon, and Froehlich.  Nay – None.  Motion carried.


End Executive Session – At 7:14 p.m. it was moved by Jane McDaniel, seconded by Alfredo Ramirez, to move out of executive session and back to regular session.  Roll call:  Aye – Krivohlavek, McDaniel, Ramirez, Pfeil, Cazabon, and Froehlich.  Nay – None.  Motion carried.


Adjournment – President Brad Krivohlavek adjourned the meeting at 7:15 p.m

Consent Agenda
 

Regular Meeting – Brad Krivohlavek, President, called the regular meeting of the Board of Education to order at 7:30 p .m. and declared a legally advertised meeting.  She welcomed everyone.

 

Open Meetings Act – Brad Krivohlavek, President, announced that a complete copy of the Open Meetings Act is posted on the West wall in the City Council Chambers located at 309 Madison Avenue and that a complete board packet is available for review.

 

Consent Agenda -- It was moved by Clark Froehlich, seconded by Paul Cazabon, that Item D., Audit Report, be removed from the agenda and that the remainder of the consent agenda be approved as listed.  Roll call:  Aye: McDaniel, Krivohlavek, Pfeil, Froehlich, and Cazabon. Nay:  None.  Absent:  None.  Abstained from voting:  Ramirez.  Motion carried.

Excused Absence – None

 

PersonnelReplacement Staff -- Approved a contract for Xochitl Naranjo as ELL teacher at Washington Elementary School and approved a contract for Julie Mueller as a speech language therapist at Early Childhood Center contingent upon her obtaining a license.


Resignation – Approved the resignation of Judy Stepp effective at the end of the current school year.


Policy Update – 2nd Reading of Coop Policy – Approved on second and final reading the revisions made to the Coop Policy.

Acceptance of District Audit – Postponed action until February.

 

Claims – Approved claims in the amount of $341,839.57 for General Fund; $54,407.29 for Cooperative Fund; $54,224.22 for Lunch Fund; $32,012.21 for Reserve/Depreciation Fund and $498,804.91 for Special Building Fund.

 

Award for Excellence – Angie Hausmann, 3rd grade teacher at Woodland Park was The Award for Excellence recipient.

 

Focus on Students – Focus on Students was presented by Northern Hills' kindergarten students on “Language for Learning”.

 

Superintendent’s Report Dr. Marlene Uhing's report included:  congratulations to Angie Hausmann, Award for Excellence recipient, congratulated John Furrow on being nominated as a candidate for the Young Band Director, and explained the hiring procedure for the Director of Teaching and Learning position.

 

Financial Report– Robert Waite gave the financial report.

 

Student Services Report – Mr. Witte reported on enrollment for second semester, parent-teacher conference schedule change, participation in Norfolk Dental Day on February 1, 2008, and attendance at the Reading Recovery and Literacy Conference in Illinois.

 

Instruction/Personnel – Dr. DePasquale reported on 21st Century skills.

 

Finance Committee – There was no report.

 

Activities Committee Report – There was no report.

 

Future Meetings –  Regular meeting, Monday, February 11, 2008, 4:30 p.m. study session and 7:30 p.m. regular meeting; board-administrator retreat on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 12:00 noon; and 2nd meeting of the month on Thursday, January 24, 2008 at 12:00.

 

Adjournment – President Brad Krivohlavek declared the regular meeting adjourned at 8:16 p.m.
